2025 Student Support Program
Southern Association of Marine Laboratories
The Southern Association of Marine Laboratories (SAML) offers support to students affiliated with a SAML member institution to attend a conference and/or conduct research during the 2025 calendar year.
Applications for 2025 Student Awards are now closed.
Purpose of Award. Awards are for undergraduate and graduate students at a SAML member institution. Awards are NOT granted for supplies or equipment. Awards are granted for the purposes described below. Travel is only supported as allowed by the student’s home institution.
Conference support. Support is to present research conducted primarily at a marine lab or field station of a SAML member institution or to participate in a conference for professional development. Allowable expenses include:
Registration fee
Transportation
Meals
Accommodations
Research support.
Travel to a field station or field site.
Meals and accommodations at a field station or field site.
Other research-related costs (other than equipment or supplies).
Eligibility. To be eligible, the student must be enrolled at or working at a SAML member institution. A full listing of SAML member institutions can be found at http://saml.naml.org/members/directory.php.
Verification of Student Standing. The SAML institutional Delegate or Representative will be notified of the student's application and will verify the standing of the student at that institution. A listing of the SAML member institutions and the corresponding name of the Delegate or Representative appears in a dropdown listing on the application form.
Award Amount. The amount of funding provided by SAML is limited. There are approximately 50 SAML member institutions. We anticipate that awards will be granted in amounts up to $500/award and thus, you are strongly advised to make your request for support any amount up to $500.
Award Disbursement and Tax Information. The award will be issued directly to the awardee in the form of a check. This award is considered taxable income and requires the awardee to complete and submit to us the U.S. Internal Revenue Service's form W-9: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf before the award can be disbursed.
Application. The student must apply by completing and submitting the online application form by the deadline indicated.
Timing of Award. This round of awards is for use during the 2025 calendar year only.
Deadline. Students seeking support will be notified of awards as soon as possible after closing of the application window. The application deadline is October 31, 2024, 11:59 EST.

Post-award requirements.
Awardees must acknowledge SAML funding where appropriate in presentations, publications and other products.
Awardees must provide a brief report to account for how funds were expended and state the benefits received from the award. Reports are submitted to the SAML President-Elect (SAML.President.Elect@naml.org).
If the awardee is unable to use the funds for the stated purpose of the award, the awardee must return the funds to SAML. [In this case, please contact the NAML Executive Director (Secretariat@naml.org) and the President-Elect of SAML (SAML.President.Elect@naml.org).]
